A SEVENTH person is reported to have died in a Covid-19 outbreak at a Skye care home.

News of the death of another resident at the Home Farm care home, in Portree, emerged this afternoon.

The source of the initial infection behind the hotspot is not known, but an army-run mobile testing unit has been set up in the wake of the outbreak to try to contain any wider spread of the virus in the Skye area.

Two further residents and staff are understood to have tested positive for the virus this week, taking the number of people infected at the home to 59.

But despite, the slight rise over the week, numbers of new cases across the NHS Highland area as a whole have slowed again after a sharp increase when the hotspot first emerged.

In the past 24 hours there were no newly-confirmed cases reported in the entire region, although total numbers rose slightly on the days leasing up to Wednesday. There have been 324 positive tests for Covid-19 in the NHS Highland area since the pandemic began.

The total number of Highlanders who tested positive for the virus who are known to have died is currently 97, after another nine fatalities in the past week.
