THE A9 near Alness will be closed be for some time while the emergency services deal with a serious crash involving a number of vehicles.

Police Scotland advise motorists to seek alternatives routes.

Traffic Scotland Tweeted shortly before 1pm: "The A9 is closed in both directions due to a collision around three miles south of Alness. Traffic slowing on approach. Police are on scene."

A motorist near the scene said the crash occurred just north of the Skiach junction near where there were traffic lights in connection with roadside work.

The driver said it appeared also that a loaded northbound timber lorry was involved and some of the logs were lying on the road.

Around 3.30pm it was feared the road would be closed for some time yet.

Scottish Fire and Rescue initially sent five units, but four were quite quickly stood down with one fire tender remaining on scene.

Two units went from Invergordon, one from Dingwall, one from Inverness, plus the Inverness based heavy rescue vehicle.
