MILDER temperatures across the Highlands have provided some relief on the roads following the disruption of the recent cold snap.

After the daily chaos last week that affected hundreds of pupils and school staff mainly in the Wester Ross area, a thaw has eased the situation for many affected by icy conditions.

But there was a note of caution from Highland Council winter road maintenance operatives in Ross and Cromarty east who reported this morning: "Temperatures well lower than forecast which is causing some ice on any untreated surfaces. Areas being checked and treated as necessary."

Maps of the council’s gritting routes by priority and policy are available online at www.highland.gov.uk/gritting.

Apart from Applecross Primary which opened an hour late, schools were back to normal.

It is the last week of term for most.
