Vital funds for Highland Hospice have been raised by a team of intrepid women.

The terrific10 took on the challenge of the prestigious London Landmarks Half Marathon event last Sunday and so far they have raised £9537 with donations still coming in.

Team Highland Hospice were Wendy Morgan, Kellie Calder, Shelagh Kerr, Joan Duncan, Miriam Macdonald, Sonya Morrison and Marianne Gow from Inverness, Izzy Sinclair from Strathpeffer and Kirsty Irons and Nicola Leddie from Broughty Ferry.

Hospice communications manager Wendy Morgan said: “This event is phenomenal, the buzz and atmosphere from DJs, dancers, singers and lively cheer stations as you run round the city really helps to keep you going – and to go as a group of 10 representing the hospice made us all very proud and emotional.

“It was myself and Shelagh Kerr who had the idea of participating in this event back in 2019 when a fellow mum from the Andy Pandy Nursery, Louise Mackay, received care from the hospice before she died just before her 40th birthday.

“Unfortunately, Covid thwarted our plans for the 2020 event, so this year we were finally able to do this together. We were both in tears at the start line before we even began running!”

Another of the group, Miriam Macdonald, a former head teacher of St Joseph’s and Crown primary schools, was running in memory of her dear friend Joyce Fowler who died in the hospice last year before turning 50. Miriam said that the event for her was “special in so many ways” and she wore Joyce’s name on her running bib knowing how amused her friend would have been to hear people cheering her on to run a half marathon.

Miss Morgan added: “We plan to take places in this event again next year, on Sunday, April 7, and are aiming for an even bigger team to represent Team Highland Hospice.”
