Community groups in Ross-shire have benefited from the recent round of awards from the EDF Renewables Corriemoillie Wind Farm Community funds.

More than £23,000 has been awarded to a wide range of local groups which will support community activity and help people reconnect after the pandemic.

The Marybank, Scatwell & Strathconon Fund is providing a grant of £4,500 to Fairburn Memorial

Hall volunteers to organise a programme of outdoor, healthy and creative activities for children and adults to improve well-being.

Building on the success of a similar project last year, this will help local people get active and creative and, importantly, get together. Local children will also benefit from Marybank Primary School Parent Council’s project which was awarded £3,443 to fund trips and outdoor activities for local children to learn about nature and local heritage, provide social opportunities and promote well-being post-covid. Scatwell Community Association received an award of £850 to buy equipment for community events.

On a similar theme, the Contin Community Fund awarded £1,760 to Contin, Jamestown and Tarvie Projects to organise local events and outings to bring people together and encourage them to get out and about again.

The Contin Fund also awarded £1,010 to Highland Trail Riders to buy a tool store that will help volunteers maintain local mountain bike trails, £1,200 to Contin Community Council to produce the Contin Post newsletter, and £2,995 to the Contin Community Trust to buy equipment for the new hall such as a dishwasher.

The Strathpeffer Fund is also helping to support community activity with a grant of £1,411 to Strathpeffer & District Community Rowing Club to help build of a new Ness Yoal boat for community rowing and sailing, an award of £3,498 to Strathpeffer Indoor Bowling Club for two new bowling carpet mats, and a contribution of £3,000 to Strathpeffer Residents Association towards the cost of creating a path network in the community park.

The Strathpeffer Fund previously supported the community park, a major local project, with funding to help with drainage works and most recently an award of £2,558 to buy a storage container. The container is now on site and is helping local volunteers in carry out their work.

Local volunteer Dave Genney said: “The park has huge potential but needs a lot of tender loving care from our amazing and growing team of volunteers. The shed is making a huge difference to Strathpeffer Community Park's growing band of volunteers by providing secure and accessible on-site storage for our equipment.

"It is already becoming a social focal point for our events e.g. tree planting and volunteer meets. We have surrounded the shed with willow that will eventually help the shed blend into our expanding native woodland. The wind farm funding also helped lever an additional £2.5k from the Nature Restoration Fund because we were able to demonstrate we had secure storage for the equipment purchased via that fund. So a double win.”

The Fund is provided by EDF Renewables. EDF Renewables, director of asset operations, Piero Maggio said: “As we move towards better weather, it’s great to see our funds support so many outdoor initiatives in and around our wind farm developments. The engagement from so many worthy projects and local groups gives us great pleasure and we always love to hear how our funds benefit people locally.”

EDF Renewables provides funding for several community benefit funds in the Corriemoillie Wind Farm area. Groups working to benefit people in the Contin Community Council area can apply for grants of up to £3,000 from the Contin Fund.

The next application deadline is 29th August 2022.
