An apprentice welder panicked when police tried to stop him riding his dirt bike in a forest.

As officers attempted to flag him down, uninsured 21 year old Darren O'Neill of Cherry Drive, Conon Bridge swerved round him and sped off.

Then when police caught up with him, he denied he was the rider or the owner of the bike despite his name being on it. The biker also claimed the bike had been stolen.

However Inverness Sheriff Court was told O'Neill came clean a few minutes later and confessed to police.

O'Neill admitted driving with no insurance on Contin Forest car park on June 16, 2020, failing to stop for police and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Fiscal depute Victoria Silver said O'Neill explained to police that he was nervous and that was the reason for his earlier denials.

Sheriff David Nicolson commented: "So the pretence that it had been stolen was only for a few minutes."

Defence solicitor Graham Mann said: "He dug himself into a deeper hole and then dug himself out of it."

O'Neill was fined a total of £320 and disqualified from driving for 30 days.
