WIDELY forecast spring snow has prompted a weather warning from Highland police - while fire chiefs remain concerned about wildfires.

On Tueday morning, Northern Constabulary said many roads had been affected by snow and urged motorists to take sensible precautions.

Two roads in the force area - the A939 Grantown-on-Spey to Dava and the B9007 Carrbridge to Ferness - were closed because of snow this morning.

Police said: "Many other roads are affected by snow, with the Inverness, Badenoch, Strathspey and Nairn areas particularly badly affected.

"Snow is continuing to fall making driving conditions difficult and police are asking road users to take care and allow extra time for their journeys."

Up to date information on the condition of roads throughout the Highlands and the rest of Scotland can be obtained from the Traffic Scotland Helpline on 0800 028 1414 or online at www.trafficscotland.org

Weather forecasters say the snow should gradually clear giving way to sleet.

MEANWHILE following on from the recent spate of wildfires attended by Highlands & Islands Fire & Rescue Service (HIFRS) during the unseasonal dry weather conditions in March, HIFRS is again urging land owners and members of the public to be more vigilant.

Watch manager Robbie MacDougall, lead wildfire officer for HIFRS said: “We would encourage landowners that are carrying out controlled burning of vegetation to be fully aware of their responsibilities.

"This includes notifying HIFRS of any planned burning and having adequate personnel and equipment on site to deal with any unplanned fire spread safely and controlled."

Members of the public are also asked to be more aware whilst outdoors enjoying the dry weather conditions. Cigarettes should be completely extinguished before disposal and camp fires and portable barbecues should not be considered in remote areas where the surrounding vegetation can become so easily ignited.
