Most are situated in Sutherland, Skye and Lochaber – but Plockton's High School and Primary, Kyle Primary, and Achiltibuie Primary, are also affected.

The weather is also having an impact on transport, with CalMac warning of possible disruption or cancellation to some of its sailings in the Minch on Tuesday.

A spokesman for CalMac said: "The 1pm sailing from Stornoway [to Ullapool] and 4.30pm from Ullapool [to Stornoway]are timetabled to operate, but remain liable to weather disruption or cancellation. Passengers are advised to check in as normal.

"The latest check in time for Stornoway is 12.15pm and the latest for Ullapool is 3.45pm. Earlier check in is advised due to volume of traffic and road conditions."
