A pair of railway stations in Ross-shire are among the 20 least used in the whole of Britain, new figures have revealed.

The Office of Rail and Road has released figures for all stations over the period between April 1 last year and March 31, 2023.

And Lochluichart (12th least used) and Achanalt (18th least used) were among the 20 quietest on the entire rail network.

Lochluichart saw 182 passengers alight or embark trains over that period, with Achanalt recording 282.

They weren't the least used in the Highlands though, with Scotscalder in Caithness (seventh least used, 124 passengers) and Kildonan in Sutherland (10th, 148 passengers) both quieter than Lochluichart; and Sutherland's Invershin (15th, 232 passengers) and Caithness's Altnabreac (17th, 280 passengers) quieter than Achanalt.

Culrain (20th, 304 passengers) on the Far North Line rounded out the Highland stations in the top 20.

There are almost 2600 stations across the network.

The quietest in the UK was Teesside Airport, with just two.

The figures were recorded only up to April 1 this year, so the temporary closure of Altnabreac did not factor into its position on the list.
