A Ross-shire man grabbed his partner's throat and restricted her breathing after she had asked him to carry out a family task.

Andrew McCallum, now of Balnabeen, Conon Bridge told her on June 15, 2020 he was wanting to sleep as he had work the next day and an argument ensued, Inverness Sheriff Court heard.

Fiscal depute Emma MacEwan said: "It got out of hand and she sustained bruising to her neck as a result. She messaged a friend saying that she was terrified by the incident and the police were called.

"He then contacted her friend the following day and made admissions, saying: 'I am sorry. I shouldn't have done it. But she winded me up.' "

McCallum admitted the assault to injury which took place in a house in Logan Way, Muir of Ord.

His lawyer, David Patterson, said: "There have been no offences since. Their relationship had become toxic."

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank fined McCallum £670 and ordered him to pay his partner £500 in compensation.

After reading a social work background report, the Sheriff criticised McCallum for derogatory comments he made in it about his partner. The sheriff told the 43-year-old: "You should have been more supportive towards your partner and I don't like your attitude."
