Pressure to upgrade roads
From the edition of October 4, 1996
An urgent plea to upgrade a west coast road has triggered an application from Highland Council for Objective One support.
Backing the application for the A832 Glen Docharty road improvements, Wester Ross Joint Community Councils have made a submission to Highland Council supported by a report from Mackay Consultants on the case for completing the improvement of the road system.
Local councillors Roy MacIntyre and Norman Cameron are giving strong support to the campaign to upgrade to modern double standard the A832 Achnasheen/Gairloch and the A890 Achnasheen/Lochcarron routes.
Cllr MacIntyre doubted whether any other countries in Western Europe had so-called 'A class' roads which are single carriageway.
Action was needed if improvements to schools, housing and leisure facilities in the area were to be realised, he said. The traffic situation was described as "chaotic".
Dingwall turns the tables
From the edition of October 8, 1971
The tables were turned on Wednesday evening at the Dingwall Academy playing fields when the senior football teams from Dingwall and Invergordon met in the first round of the Scottish Schools' Cup competition.
Dingwall won their way through comfortably to the next round against an Invergordon team which failed to show the fire and endeavour of their meeting the previous Thursday.
This is the first time Ross-shire schools have taken part in this competition and dingwall should do well in coming rounds. Stewart Patience shot Dingwall into a half-time lead. Tommy Tulloch scored the second with a great shot from 25 yards which struck the upright and rebounded into the goal. Billy Murray slammed home the third from a goalmouth scrimmage.
The sum of £523.62 was raised by the sponsored walk completed by 65 Plockton High pupils in aid of the blind.
