A ROSS-SHIRE golf club has made its own bit of history with the appointment of the first woman to the role of club captain.

Susan Campbell, more familiar to many during her time as a senior charge nurse in Raigmore Hospital’s Accident and Emergency department, has a long history with Muir of Ord Golf Club having first joined in 1988.

In a message to members she said: “As we have been unable to hold our EGM due to Covid restrictions I thought I would take this opportunity to let you know how honoured I am on becoming club captain and to thank everyone who has given me support and encouragement in achieving it.

“Although we are not the first golf club to appoint a woman as captain in the area we are certainly one of the front runners and demonstrates how inclusive a club we are becoming.”

Susan’s election follows on from Eveline Hutton becoming the first female president of the club in 2018, a role she fulfilled for two years.

Susan, who lives near Beauly, said:”Here’s hoping that 2022 returns us to some sort of normality and enables us to return to life without restrictions once more.”

She first joined after moving to Inverness to take up the post in Raigmore Hospital: “Anyone unfortunate enough to have reason to attend A&E may well have seen me there.”

She left golf for a few years around 2000, rejoining in 2007/8 and becoming part of the club’s council in 2012- 2017 then again in 2019, becoming vice-captain in 2021.

She said: “I have always found Muir of Ord Golf Club to be a very friendly and welcoming club, long may that continue.

“This new council will be the most representative of our membership in age and gender that I am aware of and look forward to hearing their views on how we should move forward and enhance the club for all our members and visitors.

“I plan to meet with John Forbes, our club manager, on a weekly basis and invite you to get in touch with any suggestions or concerns you may wish to bring to our attention.”
