An offshore engineer who travels the country to carry out his work kept his driving licence after being caught speeding at 107mph in a 60mph zone in Ross-shire.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson decided against banning 40-year-old Ryan Mackenzie of Ardival, Strathpeffer from the road at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.

Instead, she fined him a total of £640 and endorsed his licence with nine penalty points, which means he is one road traffic offence away from an automatic six month ban under the totting up procedure.

The court heard that Mackenzie was returning home from work in Kishorn on August 8 last year when he was caught in a police speed trap at Achanalt.

Defence solicitor Clare Russell told the court that her client had been overtaking another vehicle which was only travelling at 40mph when it increased his speed.

"He increased his speed to complete the manoeuvre when he should have aborted it. His licence is essential to his work."

Mackenzie admitted speeding and driving without insurance. Ms Russell added: "He was driving his father's car which was insured but he didn't check if it covered him."
