Seven vacancies to fill on Maryburgh Community Council as efforts made to reform grassroots body

PEOPLE are being encouraged to step forward to fill vacancies in a Ross-shire community council.
Highland Council has published a notice of election on its website in an attempt to try and reform Maryburgh Community Council.
Maryburgh Community Council was unable to form during the last interim community council elections. With seven places to fill, it is hoped that this second attempt attracts enough local interest.
Council leader Margaret Davidson said: “Community council’s play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between local communities and many public agencies. As well as acting as a voice for the local community they play an active role in a wide number of issues from new buildings and roads to local services and facilities.
“The Covid outbreak has shown the great community spirit there is across the Highlands and has highlighted more than ever before the very valuable role community councils, alongside many other volunteer and local groups play when it comes to helping to co-ordinate and deliver actions on the ground.
“I’m pleased that this opportunity is open to anyone over the age of 16 as I feel it is important that as wide a range of people get involved so that different opinions and ideas are heard. Many people find the role of serving their local community very rewarding, so I really encourage anyone interested to put themselves forward.”
Nomination forms and further information are available now from the council’s website or from the ward manager.
The closing date for the return of nomination forms is noon on Tuesday, November 10. If more candidates come forward than the number of vacancies available, postal ballots will take place on Thursday, December 3.
