Fraser Brothers in Dingwall savour taste of success in Scottish Craft Butchers Awards thanks to black pudding recipe passed down the generations

A DINGWALL butcher is hoping to go into a black pudding production overdrive after winning the North of Scotland Championship for the Scottish speciality.

Fraser Brothers beat all other northern entrants to lift the regional title in the Scottish Craft Butchers Awards – and were also judged Reserve Champion for the whole of Scotland.

A recipe passed down through the generations is the secret behind the success of the tasty bite produced by a business that has been in the owner’s family since 1888.

Shop manager Murray Mackay said: “It’s tremendous to have your product judged as outstanding among the stiff
competition from other butchers.We’re not mass producers – we just make and sell fresh to meet demand.

“Hopefully, this award will see demand rise for our black pudding and we’ll work to produce enough to meet that increased trade.”

The famous black pudding is supplied to local cafes, businesses and restaurants throughout the region.

And with Burns Night just around the corner, the firm can also lay claim to being North of Scotland Haggis Champion too.

NFU Scotland president Martin Kennedy and chief executive Scott Walker judges the championship final.

Mr Kennedy said: “It is no surprise that consumers have increasingly turned to butchers throughout the pandemic for reassurances on where their meat comes from and how it has been reared.

“And with such high-quality products, like those that made it to the final, the future for Scottish craft butchers is assured.”
