A DISRUPTIVE band of snow is expected to dump up to another 15cm on parts of the Highlands this weekend – and the Met Office has issued a yellow warning.

The latest alert, which runs for all of Saturday, has further extended the region's run of continuous weather warnings for snow and ice.

Two other alerts are already in place for Wednesday, and also Thursday into Friday.

But while those other warnings are for snow showers heading in from the North Sea, Saturday's disruptive snow is expected to come in from the west as a weather front bumps into the area's frigid temperatures, which have fallen to levels not seen in more than a decade.

Commenting on Saturday's warning, a Met Office forecaster said: "A band of snow is likely to arrive into Northern Ireland during the early hours of Saturday, then move east into parts of England, Wales and Scotland through the day.

"Not all areas will have snow, but where it does fall one to four centimetres are possible widely, with five to 10cm, perhaps up to 15cm over high ground.

"In addition to snow, some freezing rain may also fall in places, leading to very slippery conditions."

Saturday's warning extends as far north on the mainland as Drumbeg on Sutherland's west coast, and will cover much of Ross-shire (bar Easter Ross and the Black Isle), Loch Ness and most of the Great Glen, Lochalsh, Lochaber and parts of Badenoch and Strathspey.

Lewis, Harris, Skye, Raasay, the Small Isles, Coll, Mull, Colonsay, Jura, Gigha, Arran, Bute and Cumbrae are among the islands also covered by the alert.

Saturday's warning also extends into Argyll, Perthshire, Fife, the Central Belt, Dumfries & Galloway and parts of the Scottish Borders.

Meanwhile, communities on Ross-shire's east coast are facing fresh snow showers on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday amid active warnings on the Highlands' northern and eastern coasts.
