THE parent council of a Ross-shire secondary has appealed to parents and pupils affected by the SQA exam results downgrade fiasco to bear with the school team on what is likely to be "a very intense" first day back after the coronavirus lockdown.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney yesterday announced that pupils who had Scottish Qualifications Authority results downgraded from teacher estimates will now see those restored in the wake of a nationwide outcry over the issue.

The news coincides with the return to school for most pupils this week after the March coronavirus lockdown followed by the summer holidays.

Tain Royal Academy Parent Council said in a social media posting last night: "Following on from the Scottish Government announcement today regarding SQA results please see message from TRA.

"As we are sure you can all appreciate, tomorrow is going to be a very intense day as pupils start to return to school so please bear with the team at TRA and more info will follow shortly."

The school told parents that following the announcement on SQA results, replacement certificates will be issued "in due course" by SQA. It said: "Meanwhile, we will issue information about how this will affect individual candidates over the next few days, as soon as we have had time to process all of the information. Please bear with us while we go through that process."
