A ROSS MP has urged constituents to submit their meter readings before March 31 to avoid paying higher rates on energy.

Jamie Stone, who represents Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, has urged people to submit meter readings to their electricity and gas providers by 31st March to avoid paying the new higher rates on energy used before 1st April.

The price cap for default tariff customers will increase on 1st April from £1277 to £1971 per year - an increase of £693, or 54%. Prepayment customers will see an even sharper increase of £708, taking the cap from £1309 to £2017.

The MP is now calling on households to make sure they are charged at the lower rate on gas and electricity used up until 31st March.

Jamie Stone, MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: “To avoid overpaying on your energy bills, submit an up-to-date reading to your electricity provider, and your gas supplier if you have one, on 31st March. This will ensure that you are only charged the higher rate on energy you use from the 1st April onwards.

“I am acutely aware that these price hikes are unmanageable for many people. Liberal Democrats at Westminster and Holyrood are doing all that we can to push for more government support. In the meantime, I urge everyone in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross to make sure they submit their meter reading on 31st March.”
