A ROSS MP has slammed "rip off" companies who are hiking up delivery charges for Highland people and businesses.

Ian Blackford MP was speaking on the adjournment debate of Online Retail Delivery Charges in the House of Commons.

Mr Blackford, the SNP member for Ross, Skye and Lochaber, said: "Consumers and businesses are being ripped off.

"A survey by Citizens Advice Scotland published today showed that average delivery prices across the UK have increased from £4.99 to £5.01 over the last three years, in real times a decline in prices. Yet over the same time period the average Highland surcharge over and above this has increased from £12.10 to £14.23.

"When we consider that online shopping is 15% of the retail market in the UK, consumers in rural areas are facing a massive increased cost to participate in this growing market".

He called on the government to do more to protect consumers in all rural areas from being exploited and that as a first step there is a revision of the universal service obligation.

During the debate, Nick Boles the Minister for Skills, promised to set up a meeting.

Mr Boles said: "Critically, I propose that we also invite senior executives from the big online retailers, and ask them what they are doing to ensure that information is provided transparently, early, and upfront. What are they doing to ensure that, as far as possible, the same options are available to all consumers, and that, when costs vary, they vary only in accordance with the true underlying costs of transporting parcels? I should be happy to organise such a round table, to chair it, and to welcome the contribution of all members."

Afterwards, Mr Blackford said: "I would hope that concrete proposals come out of the round table talks the minister is going to organise that sees the end of rip off delivery charges in the Highlands of Scotland."
