THE importance of being properly equipped when heading to the hills has been emphasised by a Ross-shire mountain rescue team leader following a night-time call-out.

Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team was deployed by Police Scotland on Friday night after receiving a report from a walker who had become lost in the hills to the north of Loch Mullardoch.

Six team members and two SARDA Scotland search dogs attended and began a search of the area.

About 9.30pm the missing walker was located close to East Benula Lodge and was found to be uninjured.

Team leader Iain Nesbitt said "I would like to remind walkers how important it is to be properly equipped when heading onto the mountains.

"A map and compass, along with the ability to use it, are absolutely essential at all times of year. They are not optional extras and basic navigation techniques are easy to master."

The Loch Mullardoch Munros "make for a spectacular ridge-walk in an extremely remote part of the Highlands", according to the respected Walk Highlands website.

It states: "The tiring walk back along the north side of Loch Mullardoch completes an extremely long day."
