A ROSS-SHIRE lifeboat crew sprang into action last night following a report of a yacht drifting towards rocks.

Kyle lifeboat volunteers were called out for what was their eighth shout in the past month to a yacht which had dragged its anchor off Toscaig on the Applecross peninsula and was drifting towards the rocks

Kyle lifeboat Spirit of Fred. Olsen launched at 7:15pm after the UK Coastguard received reports of the incident.

The lifeboat arrived on scene at 7:25pm and put a crew member aboard to assess the situation.

After a search of the vessel, it was determined that there was no-one on board, so the crew quickly took it under tow before it ran aground.

After the Coastguard spoke to the person who reported the incident, it was ascertained that the occupants had gone ashore earlier in the day and had not yet returned. So the lifeboat towed the vessel towards the pier in the bay looking for a suitable and safe place to moor it.

With the help of a local resident, a suitable mooring was identified, and the lifeboat secured the yacht to await the return of the sailors.

The lifeboat was then stood down and departed the scene at 8:30pm, arriving back in Kyle at 8:45pm.
