POIGNANT acts of remembrance will be staged across Ross-shire today marking 100 years since the end of World War I.

In the county town, Remembrance Sunday will be marked by a High Street parade led by the Royal British Legion Scotland (Dingwall branch) from the Old Town House towards the war memorial for a short service prior to the two-minute silence at 11am.

A special centenary memorial stone made by Stewart Bain of John Hood & Sons bearing the inscription '1918-2018 - Highland Memory is Long for Highland Love is Strong' will be laid at the base of the existing memorial and dedicated as part of the service.

An additional commemorative stone with large inlaid poppy motif is being set into the flagstones within the gated approach to the memorial, aiming to prompt remembrance on a daily basis by passers-by for the sacrifices of the past.

The inlaid poppy was fabricated by the Global Energy Group.

A joint interdenominational service is being hosted by the Free Church at 11.45am, to which all are welcome.

The commemoration continues in Dingwall when a beacon is lit at 7pm on land at Knockbain owned by Ross-shire's deputy Lord Lieutenant, David Lockett. It should be viewable from most points in Dingwall.

It's hoped local scouts will provide teas and coffees at the council buildings in town to coincide with this.
