An engineer who travels the country to carry out his work is facing losing his licence after being caught speeding at 107mph in a 60mph zone in Ross-shire.

Ryan Mackenzie of Ardival, Strathpeffer was returning home from work in Kishorn on August 8 last year when he was caught in a police speed trap.

Defence solicitor Clare Russell told Sheriff Robert Frazer that her client had been overtaking another vehicle which was only travelling at 40mph when it increased his speed.

She said: "He increased his speed to complete the manoeuvre when he should have aborted it. His licence is essential to his work."

Mackenzie admitted speeding at Achanalt and driving without insurance.

Ms Russell added: "He was driving his father's car which was insured but he didn't check if it covered him."

Sheriff Frazer said he was considering a ban because: "It is a high speed."

He deferred sentence for 40-year-old Mackenzie's personal appearance on October 7.
