FOLK grounded by lockdown are being invited to reach for the sky thanks to a big-hearted offer from a model plane enthusiast in Ross-shire.

Andrew Biddlecombe has said he will provide foam board aircraft kits for folk in Garve and surrounding district as a fun project to counteract the lockdown blues.

The idea has been shared through the Garve and District group and hopes are high it could ultimately lead to a post-lockdown celebratory “air show”.

Mr Biddlecombe, who lives in Strathgarve, said: “I built myself a machine that cuts out these plans. It seemed like something families could do together while everyone is locked down.

“It’s not overly technical and the materials needed are pretty basic.

“Although they are designed to be flown with an electric motor, this can be added later if you wish. They can be painted, or you can download and print ‘skins’ that will cover the plane in a particular design.” YouTube videos produced by a group called Flite Test offer build tips and Mr Biddlecombe is happy to offer help over the phone or by online video call if needed.

The idea has struck a chord with several orders coming in already.

The materials will be funded by Lochluichart Community Trust through the Activate Garve & District project. The scheme is restricted to the Garve and surrounding area and kits can be delivered or left for pick-up.

There are even hopes an air show could be staged in Garve at some point in the future to showcase what participants have been able to come up with.

While he has selected three models types to try out, there are many possibilities. He said: “It’s a case of start and build your skills up as you go!”
