A ROSS-SHIRE community has come up with an alternative way for people to show their respect ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

While many traditionally staged parades have been cancelled in line with social distancing guidelines, a number of communities are finding their own ways to mark the occasion.

The Maryburgh Community group said that because of the Covid-19 guidelines, there will be no official laying of the wreath at the war memorial this year.

But it said it was keen to find alternative ways to remember those who gave their lives in conflicts and has come up with the idea of painted stones which can be decorated with poppies and placed at the war memorial on Hood Street or the memorial area close to the hall.

It suggests using acrylic paint on stones and finishing with gloss varnish to make them weather proof.

The group stresses it is not an organised event and children should place their stones before Sunday, November 8.

Traci Payne commented: "Lovely idea. Imagine if everyone in the village painted just one stone."
