Record-breaking NC500 cyclist Robbie Mitchell was celebrating more than his epic pedal round the tourism route this week.

For, after arriving back in the Highland capital, he asked his long-term girlfriend Ann Lindsay to marry him - and she said yes!

Robbie popped the question at the Flora MacDonald monument, located outside Inverness Castle.

He said: “We have been together for a long time and she has been very patient and an absolute star. She has put up with a lot, including being woken up every weekend at 4am and even earlier for me to go training.

“It just seemed like the right time to ask her.”

Durness native Robbie (40) set out from Inverness at midnight last Thursday and returned 29 hours, five minutes and 42 seconds later, beating by two hours the previous record of 31 hours, 19 minutes and eight seconds.

The veteran cyclist undertook the challenge in aid of the Edinburgh Sutherland Association and has raised £2973 so far.

Association patron David Morrison, who also hails from Durness, boosted the fund by donating £1032 - £2 per mile.
