THE new man chairing Highland Council’s community services committee has promised to strive for better roads and community transport.
Allan Henderson’s new remit includes roads, waste management, housing, transport, school janitors, environmental health and harbours maintenance.
He said: "It’s an extremely hard act to follow the chairmanship of outgoing councillor Graham MacKenzie. I hope to continue in the same committed approach that he took. It’s about getting the simple things right, the simple things that make life easier for the public."
The Caol and Mallaig Independent member said the long-running saga surrounding the Stromeferry bypass in Wester Ross would also have his full attention and he would be keeping close tabs on progress of the Inverness West Link road.
Improving ferry links, upgrading the A82 and monitoring improvements on the A9 and the A96 and were also high on his agenda.
And as a starting bonus, he hopes to be handed at least £2million for shovel-ready road improvement projects within the next few weeks.
This would come out of an unspent £5.7million pot.
He said the council’s winter gritting service also had to be "revisited" and he was determined to find "community solutions".
