DINERS who flock to an award-winning Black Isle restaurant this weekend will help to raise vital funds towards the Beirut explosion relief effort.

The port city in Lebanon suffered catastrophic damage on August 4 after a fire at the docks ignited 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate that was being stored there – causing a blast that levelled entire buildings, shattered windows kilometres away and left a colossal crater.

More than 170 people were killed, thousands injured and many left homeless by the explosion's devastating shockwave, which caused an estimated $10bn-$15bn worth of damage. Some 8000 buildings were damaged in the blast, including 60 historic structures which were left at risk of collapse.

In a bid to contribute to the relief effort The Anderson in Fortrose will be helping to raise funds towards the Lebanese Red Cross.

Jim Anderson, co-owner of the award-winning restaurant with rooms, will match all donations made by his dinner customers over the weekend of August 21-23, to benefit the relief effort.

“This is the sort of tragedy that requires global support," said Mr Anderson, who moved to the Highlands in 2003 from the USA. “There is no such thing as too small a donation.”

The latest in their programme of internationally-themed Lockdown Menus, The Anderson will feature authentic Lebanese dishes on Saturday, August 22, including Kibbeh, Maalouf and Shawarma; as well as their menu of pub classics on Friday and Sunday, August 21 and 23.

Meals are available to take away from 5pm-9pm all three nights, with a limited number of tables also available for dining in on Friday and Saturday. Customers will be able to make donations of £1 or £5 through the online ordering page on The Anderson’s website or in person when dining in.

The Anderson was established in 2003 by Jim and Anne Anderson. They have won numerous awards, most notably the Scottish Chefs Award, CAMRA Pub of the Year, Ambassadeur d’Orval and Whisky Magazine’s Whisky Bars of the World.

More information and takeaway menus may be found at www.theanderson.co.uk or on Facebook at TheAndersonUK.
