‘Hazard’ road gets boost

Highland Council welcomed the Scottish Office go-ahead for the £2.7 million final stretch of improvements on the A9 south of the Dornoch Bridge.

The work between Logie Easter and Garrick Bridge, near Tain, will be carried out by Morrison Construction and will begin early in the new year.

Highland Councillor for Tain, Jamie Stone, said: “This is very welcome news indeed. The road...is particularly hazardous and its upgrading will be welcomed in the community and by regular A9 users.”

Roads and transport committee chairman John Farquhar Munro said: “Our representations in campaigning for the upgrade of the A9 south of the Dornoch Bridge have paid off handsomely.”

Labour confirmed Runrig lead singer Donnie Munro had gone forward for selection as candidate for the Ross, Skye and Inverness West constituency., presently held by Charles Kennedy.

Airstrips set for inspection

With the owners’ consent, the county surveyor of Ross and Cromarty, Mr F.J. White, is to arrange for an expert visual inspection of the airstrips at Evanton and Fearn.

It was intimated at a recent meeting of Ross and Cromarty Health Committee that work on the erection of health centres in Dingwall and Alness was expected to begin in 1972.

Three premium bond holders in Ross and Cromarty have received £1000 each in the December draw. One prize of £100 and eight of £50 have also come to the county.

Dingwall Town Council have offered the Ambulance Service a site adjacent to Newton's Garage on the Strathpeffer Road for the purpose of erecting an ambulance station.

The service are delighted with the site, the cost of which is now the subject of valuations with the District Valuer, the paper reported 50 years ago this week.

Notes from Easter Ross

From the edition of December 23, 1921

The gale on Friday night removed some thatch from some houses in Hilton and Balintore.

The Nigg folks held their first whist drive and dance for the season in the Territorial Hall last Tuesday.

An envelope collection in aid of the U.F. Church Central Fund is to be made on the first Sunday in most churches in Easter Ross.

Tain Literary Society held a most successful ‘at home’ in the Town Hall on Friday. Bailie W. Ross presided over a large attendance.

Mr John D. Ross has been re-appointed chairman of the Kincardine Parish Council and Mr. W. Duncan, Balintore, representative to the Easter Ross District Committee.

The Nigg branch of the Ploughman’s Union met last Wednesday in Pitcalnie Public School. Circulars from headquarters, as well as matters relating to hours and wages, were discussed.
