A RECORD number of school pupils have taken part in a competition which encourages them to develop their culinary skills – with a teenager from Ross-shire proving the best of the bunch.

A total of 79 contestants as young as 12 competed in the sixth annual Schools Masterchef competition organised by the Rotary Club of Inverness Culloden and sponsored by Williamson Foodservice.

The finals were held at Inverness College UHI college this week where Dingwall Academy’s Lauren Bell (16) triumphed over Emma Warner (13) from Inverness High School, Charlotte Burton (12) of Inverness Royal Academy and 12-year-old Alix Callaghan from Fortrose Academy.

Managing director of Williamson Foodservice, Gary Williamson, said: “It is encouraging that more schools and competitors have been involved this year than ever before. Chefs from local hotels, restaurants and other eateries also came forward in greater numbers as judges and this added to an even greater experience for all concerned.”

The finalists were judged by two of Scotland’s finest culinary talents – renowned food writer and founder of Skye’s luxury hotel and restaurant Kinloch Lodge, Lady Claire Macdonald, and the venue’s head chef, Marcello Tully.

Mrs Macdonald said: “The effort that the Rotary Club put into this competition every year is amazing, they are so selfless and were great at organising it.”
