Raigmore Hospital team wins top award

A TEAM of pharmacists based at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness has been recognised in this year’s prestigious Scottish Pharmacy Awards for its work with cancer patients.
The NHS Highland oncology pharmacist team was named the Hospital Pharmacy Team of the Year award
The five-strong group provides care for cancer patients across NHS Highland by supporting the medical and nursing teams to provide optimal care to their patients.
It was recognised for its innovative work including audit work looking at the impact of immunotherapy in patients with metastatic melanoma and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in breast cancer patients.
Leanne Miller, NHS Highland’s lead cancer care pharmacist for oncology outpatients, outlined what it meant to win the award.
“We were delighted to be nationally recognised for the innovative approach we have adopted in the north of Scotland,” she said.
“We are based at Raigmore Hospital but we work closely with Macmillan nurses in hospitals in Wick, Skye, the Western Isles and Fort William to provide pharmaceutical care to their patients in the absence of specialist oncology pharmacists in these areas.
“We work with a large technical team in pharmacy who support us in the production and management of chemotherapy for patients across the Highlands and this award is also a credit to this team.
“The team has a close working relationship with pharmacy colleagues across the North of Scotland Cancer Network through development of joint guidelines, clinical management guidelines and sharing of project work.”
The coveted awards were announced at a glittering ceremony which was held at the Hilton Glasgow Hotel.
