MEMBERS of an Easter Ross gymnastics club are turning cartwheels after a public vote of confidence helped land a £48,000 windfall set to boost the profile of the sport across the county.

Alness-based Fyrish Gymnastics Club came up trumps after a TV vote ensured a share in a National Lottery handout.

The £48,624 will be used to expand outreach work in schools, employ an outreach development co-ordinator and identify more people to become peer leaders.

“Street gym” classes will be taken to more schools.

The club’s Claire Bath said: “We are very grateful to all the local people, businesses and community groups who helped us to achieve this as well as our gymnasts, coaches, parents and committee who have worked tirelessly to promote the voting process as well as to represent the club continually with pride and respect.

“Our little club is punching well above its weight now and this is only achieved with teamwork and dedication. We are excited to take gymnastics to many more children in primary schools and hope our street gym programme helps to address some of the problems secondary schools face.”
