'Cheerful note' from ewe trade though power 'in seriously short supply' at Dingwall Mart sale

A TOTAL of 958 sheep and eight cattle changed hands at Dingwall Mart today.

Prime bullocks (2) averaged 249.5p per kg (N/C) and sold to 251.0p per kg and £1,681.70 gross for a 670kg Simmental cross from Garguston, Muir of Ord.

Prime Heifers (6) averaged 248.0p per kg (-20.5p) and sold to 258.0p per kg for a 540kg Limousin cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall selling to Messrs John M Munro Ltd, Dingwall and £1,926.60 gross for an 845kg Charolais cross from Shorecroft, Culbokie.

Old Season Lambs (713) averaged 216.4p (-13.7p) and sold to 233.0p per kg for a pen of 44kg Texel Crosses from Craigard Cottage, Langal and £110 gross for a pen of 56kg Cheviot Mules from Davidston Farm, Cromarty also selling to £110 gross was a pen of 48.5kg Charollais Crosses from Greenlands, Arabella.

SQQ 25.5kg to 45.5kg (337) averaged 216.6p (-22.2p) per kg.

Feeding Sheep (245) sold to £228 gross for a Texel Ewe from Keeper’s Cottage, Tomatin.

The verdict: “Lambs followed the national trend and were easier on the week for all classes despite a full company of buyers being present. Well fleshed, fed sorts were still keenly bid for but to a price.

"The ewe trade brought a more cheerful note to vendors ears and were sharper on the week. Yet again power was in seriously short supply and were seriously short of buyer’s requirements.

"Topping at £228 was a pure Texel Ewe from The Keeper’s Cottage, Tomatin.”
