MOTORCYCLISTS have been urged to take care to protect themselves from thieves after "recent incidents" in the Highlands where motorbikes have been stolen from sheds.

"While the only person responsible for anything being stolen is the thief themselves - there are steps you can take to make sure property is as secure as it can be," said a police spokesman. "Most thieves are opportunists so don't give them an opportunity.

Advice includes fitting a "good quality" hasp and padlock to the garage or shed door, and ensuring that windows are properly secure too.

"Depending on the type of window, you could consider fitting internal window grills, heavy wire mesh or reinforced glass," added officers. "You could also use curtains or opaque film. If the window opens, a window lock should be fitted."

They added that intruder alarms should also be considered and, if you don't have a secure shed, bring anything valuable inside. People selling vehicles online should not advertise where they are kept, or let people know if you are not home.
