THREE of the deaths at a coronavirus-hit care home are being investigated by the police, officers have announced.

Ten residents have died, and 59 people have been infected at Home Farm care home in Portree, Skye.

The fall-out from the Covid-19 hotspot led to an unannounced inspection by the Care Inspectorate, which subsequently started legal action to remove the licence from site owner HC-One to run the home. A sheriff last week agreed to defer a decision on that application after improvements were reported by the Care Inspectorate. NHS Highland has also stepped in to provide support to help run the home.

Speaking over the weekend, Police Scotland confirmed it was investigating the death of three of the 10 fatalities at the home.

In a statement, it said: "We can confirm we are investigating the circumstances of the deaths of three women, aged 84, 86 and 88, at Home Farm care home on Skye. Inquires are continuing."

HC-One has apologised to residents, families and the community, and said it "recognised that improvements were needed" but stressed that "safety and wellbeing" of residents was its "top priority".

In a statement, a spokesperson added: "We are continuing to make sustained and continued improvements across the home so we can deliver the very best for residents and colleagues at Home Farm."
