FORTROSE police station is one of eight in the Highlands which will be axed over the next three years.

The move follows a public consultation after Police Scotland mooted their closure last year. Some of those facing the axe are rarely used.

Some 212 people in the Highlands responded to the consultation. More than a quarter of those surveyed had no issue with Fortrose’s closure, but 19 per cent did. More than half had no view.

A statement given to the Scottish Police Authority said: “Police Scotland inherited a large estate which was based on the arrangements of eight regional police forces.

“The estate was developed over a significant period of time when demands on policing were very different.

“Less people now attend at a police station and the way police resources are deployed has significantly changed.
