LOCALS in and visitors to a Wester Ross community can look forward to some perfectly poetic surprises next week.

Book Week Scotland will be celebrated in Ullapool with Ullaverse, a poetry trail around the village.

The poems will be displayed in the windows of almost 50 properties, including shops, cafes and houses, with a few off-trail poems for good measure.

The Ullaverse poetry trail includes work by some of the most exciting poets writing in Scotland today, including Glasgow’s poet laureate Jim Carruth, Caithness poet and playwright George Gunn, Inverness-based Aoife Lyall, Assynt poet and writer Mandy Haggith, and from Wester Ross, poet and writer Clare O’Brien.

Many of the poets on the trail have appeared at Ullapool Book Festival including Ian Stephen, Alan Spence, Billy Letford, Donald S Murray and Chris Dolan. Among the gems on display, there’s a poem from Rhue by landscape artist James Hawkins.

Several entrants from the Ullaverse poetry competition will have their work on display, including the winners of the competition, Josie Dodds, Megan Loftus and Rosie Maddock.

The trail features several pieces by poet-in-residence Jon Miller, whose work has appeared in some of the country’s finest literary publications. In a recent poetry workshop he helped the primary six class from Ullapool Primary School create a splendid group poem for the trail.

The trail was created by author and Ullapool resident Lorraine Thomson for the Book Week Scotland Emerging Programmers project.

Ullaverse is supported by Book Week Scotland, Scottish Book Trust and Ullapool Book Festival. Book Week Scotland runs from November 15.

Working with a wide range of partners, Scottish Book Trust – the national charity changing lives through reading and writing – will deliver events and activities across the country during Book Week Scotland linked to this year’s theme of Celebration.
