A LUCKY duck which survived a terrifying attack just weeks after being born is bouncing back with a little help from his friends.
It was touch and go for the little ball of fluff, originally named Biscuit, after a swooping seagull took bites out of him not long after he hatched.
Karen Robertson, who runs Robertson’s Larder and Children’s Farm at Beauly, turned to the experts at Conanvet in the hope they could manage to do something for the plucky surivor.
She said: "I thought it was the jaw bone at first — he looked pretty bad. He wasn’t taking any food at all and there was sinew sticking out. The vets said they would try their best."
Seven stitches, a fetching neck bandage and a lot of tender loving care later, Biscuit — soon to be renamed Lucky — was back in action.
Sadly, his sibling Sunshine wasn’t so fortunate and succumbed to injuries sustained during the same incident.
Karen said: "We were devasated as it was our first hatching. However, we have more in the incubator and Lucky can be the ‘mummy’."
She’s set to become something of a star attraction on the children’s farm, which was opened as an addition to the long-standing Tomich Farm Shop about three years ago. She’ll be joining a colourful cast of characters including Bumpy the lamb and twin pygmy goats, Twinkle and Star.
It’s proved to be a plucky duck tale with a happy ending.
