A FORMER Ross County player’s charitable work for a centre offering a lifeline to people affected by cancer has been recognised by the club.

Charlie MacRae, from Plockton, was an outside left for the Dingwall club in the early 1960s, playing alongside players including Colin Brett, Don MacMillan and Ian McNeil before giving it up to look after his elderly parents.

Charlie (78) raised £3000 for the Maggie’s Centre in Inverness with a sponsored walk around Dingwall on top of £3300 he raised last year.

Charlie went with his wife Patricia, daughter Elspeth and granddaughter Kelsa on a day out and lunch with players and staff at the Global Energy Stadium, known as Victoria Park in his day.

Recalling his long trip to Dingwall from Plockton, he said: “I would snatch a kip in the kit room and Davy Hamilton, who was a legend at the club and responsible for all the club’s football kit, would wake me up before boarding the bus.”

Elspeth said: “He hardly ever misses a game and of course was there for the championship celebrations.

“Dad had throat cancer in 2000 and the family will never forget the support we all received from Maggie’s during that period and we are grateful to everyone involved in his day out at the stadium.”

Maggie’s offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer.
