THE importance of careful route planning "cannot be overemphasised" when out walking on Wester Ross ridges which have claimed a number of lives down the years.

The plea from a mountain rescue leader came in the wake of an early-hours rescue mission for two disorienetated walkers who got into difficulties on the An Teallach traverse in Wester Ross.

A total of 16 members of Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team were scrambled at 4am on Friday morning to begin a search of the ridge assisted by a helicopter from HM Coastguard Stornoway.

The missing walkers, understood to have been from the Perth area, were located safe and well near Corriehallie by rescue team members around 8am.

The pair appear to have become disorientated and were forced to deviate from their intended route, which resulted in them spending the night out on the mountain.

One had sustained a minor leg injury as a result of a fall.

Dundonnell MRT leader Donald Macrae said that the importance of careful route planning before embarking on mountain walks – especially one as demanding as the An Teallach traverse – cannot be overemphasised. He also paid tribute to the skill and professionalism of the HM Coastguard helicopter crew "without whom, quite simply, we could not do our job."
