THE arrival of firefighters is not always greeted with smiling faces, no matter how grateful we find their presence in times of crisis.

The beaming faces at Ankerville Nursery in Alness signalled that a recent visit from the lifeline service was, happily, not as a result of an emergency but instead a planned trip eagerly anticipated by youngsters and staff alike.

The visitors came from neighbouring the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service's base in Invergordon, a near neighbour of Alness.

The youngsters have been learning about "the people who help us" and were particularly delighted to welcome their visitors in the instantly recognisable vehicle.

As well as finding out a bit more about what the job entails, a number of nursery kids were thrilled to see a hose in action and get their hands on some of the equipment used in a variety of situations.

The nursery said later: "A massive thank you to Liam, Sam, Dean and Andrew from Invergordon Fire Station who took the time out of their busy day to come visit us here in Alness and show some of the children the fire engine and explain their role within the community.

"This was a great learning experience from 'the people who help us'."

It was also an opportunity to wish "a very special farewell to our Miss Farquhar who is going on her maternity leave", adding: "We wish Lucy all the best in welcoming her baby into the world."
