Reece Mitchell, of North Kessock, was diagnosed with the CLN2 variant of Batten disease at the aged of five and was left unable to walk, talk, eat or see as a result of the incurable illness.

Sadly, he died earlier this month aged 10. His life was celebrated today at a funeral service in Inverness which was preceded by a procession from North Kessock, where the family lived.

Mourners were invited to wear bright colours.

Reece’s mum, Donna, said earlier that Reece would leave behind an important legacy having fronted a campaign for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland and helped raise awareness of Batten disease.

She said she wanted her son to be remembered “as the the little lad from North Kessock who raised so much awareness for both causes”.

She added: “In Reece’s name we will continue to do so.”

A funeral service at the funeral home of William T Fraser and Son in Inverness followed the procession.

Donna said: “Firstly I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has offered their support not only to the procession but to our family in general.

“All the kindness and support isn’t going unnoticed.”
