THE historic erection of a unique shelter frame was a real community effort on the Black Isle at the weekend.

It was a milestone for Culbokie Community Trust with the start of a shelter building on Culbokie Green.

Twenty-four volunteers helped raise the frame of the shelter building – Am Fasgadh in Gaelic.

The structure was hand-crafted by Sam Harrison of 66 Gartymore Ltd, using Douglas fir from Aigas Community Woodland. He gave an excellent description of the preparation process, which took six months, which included milling and seasoning the timber.

A detailed health and safety briefing was necessary, along with the appropriate personal protective equipment, making everyone look the part. Great teamwork from the volunteers, along with directions from Sam, ensured a smooth process as the structure was raised. After the effort of the raising the volunteers were rewarded with some delicious cake supplied by Culbokie Inn.

Richard Fyfe, CCT chairperson, said: “We would like to thank all of the volunteers, along with Councillor Lyndsey Johnston who came along to watch, as well as Sam Harrison and his team, for the great day we enjoyed together.”

Councillor Lyndsey Johnston said, “I was delighted to be able to witness this fantastic community effort. The shelter, Am Fasgadh, will be a real asset to the village. The leadership of Culbokie Community Trust has brought the residents together in a wonderful display of teamwork and has this wonderful structure to show for it and the wider village centre to show for it."
