AN Easter Ross angling club got its season under way with a traditional toast and hopes for tight lines in the months ahead.

Alness Angling Club members were joined by some interested non-fishers for last week's get-together on the banks of the River Averon.

The waters were "blessed" with drams courtesy of Dalmore and Teaninich distilleries which border the river and use its water in their production processes.

The honour of first cast of the season was given to Terry Leiper.

Club members fished the river, sadly without success, until the weather finally won. Refreshments were provided for all throughout the event with a 'warming glass' available for those who certainly needed it.

The number of salmon caught on the club waters last year was the highest for some years which was a boost after a difficult financial year. It is hoped that this will encourage new members to join the club.

Club details are available on their www.alnessanglingclub.com and Facebook page.
