PARENTS of pupils unable to attend an eagerly anticipated high school dance in Wester Ross because of bad roads have hit out the decision not to rearrange it.

A number of pupils attending Ullapool High School have been unable to make it to classes since last Thursday, due to school transport having been cancelled because of treacherous conditions on the roads.

However the Ullapool High School Winter Dance is still set to go ahead tonight, sparking disappointment amongst parents of those who will miss out. The parents expressed their disappointment and frustration on a public Facebook page.

Anna Mulholland wrote: "Just wondering if anyone else in the community thinks it is wholly inappropriate for Ullapool High School to go ahead with the children’s Christmas Party this evening, when they have cancelled all buses north of the school due to the weather."

Gillon Johnstone said:"All that this bad decision does it make our kids think that they don't matter and they aren't important to the school. The idea that this will go ahead when so many children are unable to attend is unbelievable and unfathomable."

Emma Thomas said:"I have one unhappy girl as it was her first school dance and I know her and her friends have been planning their outfits for weeks.

Some parents have offered lifts to those unable to make it.

A Highland Council spokesperson said: “We are aware that the adverse weather conditions will unfortunately affect some of our pupils ability to attend the school’s Christmas dance this evening. After deliberation, it has been found that arrangements which are in place are not easily rearranged, and therefore the decision has been made to continue the event as planned for the majority of the pupils.”
