An NC500 Wester Ross hotspot that recently saw a vehicle clocked at over 140mph led an “appalled” local representative to state that “our roads are not race tracks for tourists”.

On May 6, a man (46) in his Porsche 911 was charged with dangerous driving after police detected his car being driven at 142pmh in Achanalt on the A832 between Garve and Achnasheen. A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh councillor Liz Kraft took to social media to share her opinion on the shocking news that gained national attention.

Kraft said: “Absolutely appalled to read this. We need to put a stop to this type of behaviour. Our roads are not race tracks for tourists.

“Well done to our police for intervening. I hope there are appropriate consequences.”

MSP Maree Todd has also expressed dismay, writing to Police Scotland in hopes for “reassurance” to be provided for her constituents.

The Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MSP stated: "This incident has sparked alarm and anger amongst local communities.

"What adds to the concern are the anecdotal reports suggesting that this vehicle was part of a convoy, seemingly racing along the route.

“While most visitors are respectful and considerate, it is the minority who are causing considerable distress within our communities.

The Wester Ross native continued: "We know from previous years that this is a recurring issue on the NC500 route.

“Whilst those responsible must face the full consequences of their actions, it's equally vital for communities to have full confidence in Police Scotland to ensure road safety.

“I have written to Police Scotland regarding this and look forward to their response, which I hope will provide reassurance to my constituents.”
