As I was driving back through the Great Glen in brilliant sunshine last week, I was reflecting on the natural capital the Highlands has to offer and hoping that the good weather and extended tourism season continues to boost the local economy.
However, we need to be ready to support the tourism and hospitality sectors throughout the challenges they will no doubt face in early 2022, as the region enters off season and cash flow puts pressure on businesses.
With pressures on industry due to skills and labour shortages impacted by Brexit legislation, and the serious shortage of material and subsequent increased costs, it is reassuring to hear good news stories from our members such as Gordon & MacPhail with plans forging ahead for the opening of their new distillery The Cairn in Spring 2022. A true sign of the local industry forging forward in hard times.
Everyone is talking about COP26. Our forum will shape implementation of what will have been agreed. With focus on economic purpose, recovery, health, and green growth, SCDI will continue to work with our Highlands and Islands members to ensure voices are heard at the highest levels of government through our thought leadership.
