A VERY rare whisky donated by Lovat Estates will be one of the sought-after items at a special Dingwall auction to raise funds for Highland Hospice.

Only 777 bottles of The Old Fox spirit were manufactured by Ben Nevis Distillery for Simon Fraser Lord Lovat’s private whisky collection.

It was produced to commemorate the life of the 11th Lord Lovat, nicknamed the ‘Old Fox’ for his mischievous double-dealings and changes of allegiance, who was beheaded after the Battle of Culloden for supporting the Jacobite Rebellion.

Another bottle from the estate’s small batch sold for £1200 at a charity auction in February.

Dingwall and Highland Auction Mart are hosting the latest event free of charge for the local charity from 11am on November 27, with whisky aficionados and other members of the public able to take part online.

Mart managing director Grant Macpherson said: “We previously sold one of these for £1200 at another charity auction we did back in February.

“It is very rare. Lovat Estate had a very limited number of these produced, specially for the family, by Ben Nevis Distillery and they are not available to the general public.

“Over the years, we’ve done a lot of different things for the Highland Hospice and, with the way things are right now with Covid-19, they are really under-funded.

“We were keen to help in any way we could. They have been advertising to try and get bottles donated from the general public to sell on behalf of the hospice.

“They are still coming in and we’ll take more if anyone out there can help.”

Hospice fundraiser Fiona Stoddart said: “We’ve been delighted by the response from members of the public and other contributors.

“We can’t thank them and Simon Lord Lovat and his team at Lovat Estates enough.

“We’re hopeful of a successful and enjoyable day to raise valuable funds for the hospice.”

Many other whiskies will be auctioned, including a very special bottle of whisky from distillers Gordon and MacPhail.

The company’s director Stephen Rankin handed the hospice a ‘Queen’s Award’ celebration bottle of Glen Grant dating from 1966, which is expected to raise upwards of £4000.
