NINE new cases of Covid-19 have been detected across the NHS Highland area since yesterday.

The region’s cumulative number of infections rose from 4867 to 4876 when Tuesday’s daily update was released at 2pm.

Ten people were receiving treatment for Covid-19 in NHS Highland hospitals last night – the lowest figure since January 6 more than two months ago.

There were 597 new positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland in the past day. This was 3.8 per cent of all those tested in the last 24 hours.

Four-hundred-and-forty people were receiving treatment for the virus in the country’s hospitals last night – a fall of seven.

Of those, 42 were in intensive care – up two.

And sadly a further seven deaths were recorded among those who had tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were five new positive tests for Covid-19 in NHS Shetland. It has now had 219 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.

NHS Orkney and NHS Eileanan Siar recorded unchanged numbers overnight.

On the mainland, NHS Grampian registered 28 fresh infections, for a running tally of 13,874.

And NHS Tayside’s total rose by 29 to 13,644.

There have now been 210,605 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Scotland since the pandemic began last year.

More than 34,500 people received their first Covid-19 vaccination jag in the past 24 hours, and almost 9000 others were given their second injection during the same period.

Some 1.943 million Scots have now received at least one of the two injections.
