PLANS for a new distillery in Ross-shire have been recommended for approval.

Ardross Investments Ltd is seeking change of use consent to turn buildings at Ardross Mains into a distillery, workers’ housing, warehousing, offices and a tasting lodge.

The proposal will involve the restoration and conversion of the listed 19th century steading at the Mains, along with extensions.

The application will be discussed at a meeting of Highland Council’s north planning applications committee when it meets on Tuesday.

Planning officials are recommending the application be granted.

They consider the development will be a positive addition to Ardross in terms of the economic investment it may generate through jobs.

Officials also welcome the protection of the listed buildings at Ardross Mains with a high quality design which respects the setting of the steading as well as nearby Ardross Castle.

Ardross Community Council is generally supportive of the application and welcomes the derelict buildings being brought back into use.

But it voiced concerns over some issues including the distillery being located at the end of the Ardross public water supply which may have a negative impact on existing householders in the area.
